Turkish coffee with mastic: how it differs from cardamom coffee
Mastic and cardamom are different aromatic additions. Cardamom gives the familiar spice character associated with much Arabic coffee, while mastic contributes a distinctive resinous aroma. Neither is required, and there is no single proportion that suits everyone.
PublishedWhat is Turkish coffee with mastic?
It is Turkish coffee prepared with a small amount of food-grade mastic according to the chosen recipe. Published regional products and recipes include Turkish coffee with mastic, and some combine mastic with cardamom.
Mastic is not a coffee bean or roast level; it is an aromatic addition. Keep the choice of blend, grind and quantities separate from the choice to add mastic.
Mastic or cardamom? How the character differs
Cardamom is a common aromatic addition in Arabic and Turkish-style coffee across the region and gives a recognizable spice character. Mastic has a different resinous aroma and can become noticeable in a small amount.
Neither is objectively better. To compare them, keep the coffee, grind, water and sugar unchanged and vary only the aromatic addition.
| Question | Cardamom | Mastic |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Aromatic spice addition | Resinous aromatic addition |
| Practical starting point | Use an amount from a familiar recipe | Start very small because the aroma can become pronounced quickly |
| For comparison | Keep coffee, water and sugar fixed | Keep coffee, water and sugar fixed |
| Can they be combined? | Yes, in some recipes | Yes, in some recipes; testing them separately first is clearer |
Why start with a small amount of mastic?
Published recipes vary in both amount and technique, so this guide does not present one number as a universal standard. Mastic has a distinctive aroma and can dominate the cup when overused, so begin with a very small trial and record the result.
When using resin tears, recipes commonly grind them before use. Choose a food-grade product and follow the instructions supplied with the ingredient you bought.
How to test it in a cezve without confusing the comparison
Use a Turkish coffee method you already know and keep coffee weight, water, sugar and grind fixed. Brew one cup without an addition, then a second with a very small amount of mastic. Compare aroma and flavour after the cups have cooled slightly.
When you also want to test cardamom, do not begin with both additions together. Test each on its own first, then combine them later if you enjoy both.
Does mastic appear in Libyan coffee culture?
Recent Libyan reporting mentions mastic among aromatic additions used by some coffee drinkers, alongside cardamom, coriander and other household or regional variations. This does not make it a mandatory ingredient or a single national recipe.
It is better understood as one aromatic option within a varied contemporary Libyan coffee culture, used differently according to taste and household custom.
Does Alagnaf currently sell a mastic coffee product?
There is currently no mastic package in Alagnaf Coffee’s published range. Packaged Alkief is offered plain or with cardamom, alongside the published Classic, Dark and Espresso blends.
This is an educational guide responding to a real coffee question, not a product-launch announcement. Any future mastic product would be listed clearly on the products page.
